Wednesday was warm and very wet. We are into the second half of the qualifying stage and still 4 places adrift of the important 4th spot.
The tournament website seems to have a glitch at the moment. Results and scorecards are available but the hands are not appearing. Hopefully this will get sorted.
Match 1 Bye
Our only match off - an opportunity to sleep in. Playing as a team of four has advantages and disadvantages. There are no problems sorting out the lineup! If things are going well it is easier to get on a roll. If a pair has a bad set there is no opportunity for them to sit out and reset.
Anyway this is worth 12 VPs.
Match 2 Hong Kong China A
A strong team.
The scorecard.
Board 16 was unusual. At our table we passed the board in. At the other table our hands bid to 4S and made. 12 IMPs away. Not a great start!
Final result: Australia 17 – Hong Kong China A 62, 1.02 VPs. A bad match where both pairs had poor sets.
Match 3 Bangladesh B
A team that we would hope to beat.
The scorecard.
Final result: Australia 43 – Bangladesh B 44, 9.67 VPs. This certainly felt like an opportunity missed with many bad decisions by all concerned.
Match 4 India B
The second of the host country teams. India has many good players so we expect a tough match.
The scorecard.
Final result: Australia 27 – India B 12, 14.19 VPs. A good result that was much needed.
End of day 3, 8th out of 15, same as yesterday. with only three matches on the last day of qualifying we are barely mathematical. Fourth is currently about 31 VPs ahead of us, which is a very hard ask.
Other Australian teams:
In the Womens event the qualifying has finished. Australia B finished 5th, less than 5 VPs off qualifying. Australia A finished 7th only 3 VPs further back.
In the Mixed there is only one match left. Australia A had a great day yesterday to go from 12th to 5th. They play India A in the last qualifying match. Good luck! Australia B are 11th and playing for pride.
In the Seniors out of 8 teams, Australia are 2nd and looking like a good chance to qualify with three matches left.
